“Whenever there is a goal I want to reach, I do anything I can and more to achieve it,” rising Michigan State University sophomore Miles Grimes stated. For this reason, he is the face of determination.
Last year, Grimes sought to gain acceptance into MSU’s College of Engineering by the end of his freshman year. Since the engineering college remains notoriously competitive and selective, he knew this was no small feat. Determined to succeed, Grimes began making sacrifices to accomplish this and ultimately achieved acceptance this past summer.
“It’s part blessing and part hard work,” Grimes reflected. His determination to succeed allowed him to also obtain a 4.0 cumulative GPA.
Grimes not only demonstrates his determination academically, but socially as well. He strives to be a good and supportive friend, son and brother.
“Even though they may not be that to me all the time, I’m still going to do my best to be that for them and others,” Grimes states. By exhibiting his best self, Grimes hopes to bring out the best in others. He is a firm believer in the power of human interaction.
“Looking at someone’s face, looking them in the eyes and speaking to them, that’s what we need more of,” Grimes explains. In the age of hyper-individualism, as we look to build and advance ourselves, we must remember to keep a sense of community within us.
Miles’ determination causes him to pay very close attention to detail; it drives the passion behind the work he produces. He believes these two elements go hand in hand but realizes his passion for people sometimes comes with complications.
“I overthink,” Grimes admits. “I am so determined to be there for someone, but then sometimes fail to focus and reflect on myself.”
His determination drives him to constantly find ways of improving, thus, Grimes is discovering ways to balance how much he gives to others and himself. Recognizing no one is perfect, Grimes aims to continue treasuring the small things in life and loving himself more and more each day.
